Dedication

They say that God never gives us more than we can handle.

That may be true . . . but I’m here to tell you that if it is true, it does not stop him from redefining what you can handle and pushing right up to that new limit.

One thing I know is, unless you have lived through it . . . you just have no idea and there are no words I can write to help you truly understand. So let’s just go with it was a horrible slog.

I also know that I owe my life to my son, Christopher. He is the reason I am alive . . . PERIOD!  My son was only six when I got my news. I told every doctor who would listen and even the ones who did not believe me, that I had waited 41 years for my son to come along and I was not going to leave him now. I would do everything they asked . . . chemo, radiation, surgery and a wheelchair if need be, anything and everything . . . except die!  I had waited too long to run off and leave my son now.

So I told the doctors, “I will get used to the idea of fighting cancer . . . You guys get used to the idea that I’m not going anywhere.” As you start this journey you meet other people on a similar journey. As I spoke with them and looked into their eyes, I could see those who had given up and those who had a reason to live. Everyone with empty eyes . . . is gone.

This book talks about my life and my slog with cancer, but it’s also about living life and the rewards I got for hanging in there. Not just the time to raise my son, but also my wife, Carrie. She has won her own battle with cancer and now we are going through life side-by-side; she and her sons Mitchel and Garret, and Christopher and I accepting the challenges and relishing in the adventures. Living life to the fullest every single day.

Life is precious, don’t ever look back and say I wish I would have done this or I wish I had done that. Do it now. Tell the people in your life that you love them, right now. Treat every day as if it were your last, because you just never know!

We’ve all heard people say, “Someday I’m going to do this or someday I’m going to do that.” You’ve probably even said it yourself. But we really, really have no idea when our time is up.  So what I say to you is… Today is Someday!

Today, once again, just like every day, I am telling Christopher, Garret, Mitchel and Carrie that I love them all.  I’m dedicating this book to them because Christopher kept me alive then, and they are all my reasons for living now.
